How to Get or Rebuild Credit

Building Credit Ideas

There was a time when building credit required applying  at local department or jewelery stores if you credit profile was thin.  Nowadays with technology leading the way, it is believed that creditors are using similar algorithms when making a decisions on credit.

Chances are if you are getting denied, other creditors may deny you as well. If you share this same experience, contact me so we can evaluate your credit history and put a plan in place to avoid further frustration. Additionally, credit inquiries will only cause further damage without yielding any satisfaction.

So you want to know how to get credit or rebuild credit? Here are a few options.

Option 1:  Get a Credit Builder Loan from Self Lender

While searching online, I came across Self Lender,  an organization that is helping people like you build credit. They offer a product called builder loan.

Builder loans offer the same credit building advantages as traditional lines. According to Self Lender, builder loans are not new and were typically offered through credit unions or local banks. Self Lender is taking this product, adding their own features while making it accessible to you.

Self Lender's credit builder requires  no account or up-front deposit and allow's you to apply online for an approval decision in minutes.

How do Self Lender’s credit builder loans work?  According to Self Lender's website, credit builder loans are secured loans that are not secured with collateral from the borrower  but instead, a loan (funds deposited by Self Lender) is placed into an FDIC-insured CD account under the borrower’s name. In return, the borrower makes monthly payments (think of them as deposits) over a 12-month period.

At the end of the loan term, you will be entitle to the full CD account and the interest earned on the account. Self Lender will report the monthly payments to Equifax, Experian and Transunion. In addition, Self Lender’s credit builder loans do not require a deposit or a credit inquiry.

They use a customer's banking history to determine worthiness.

For more details, follow the links to their website.

Option 2:  Get a Secured Card from any Retail Bank

A secured card is a credit card secured by your deposit into a separate account that you do not have access to until it is closed.  Nothing fancy or complicated. You make a deposit (commitment) to a minimum amount (varies by bank) and in return you use the account like a credit card.

Each month, they will send you a monthly statement with your itemized purchases with the option to make a minimum payment or pay in full. Keep in mind that your initial deposit can't be used to make the monthly payment. Additionally, you may only spend up to your deposit limit.

There are many retail lenders that offer credit cards and their terms and conditions will vary so inquire  directly with provider or visit a site like CreditCards.com. This link will take you to their featured secured cards or you can visit your local bank like Wells Fargo  and inquire about their secured card (link provided).

It has been my experience that credit history is taken into consideration but lenders may be more forgiving. Please follow the links provided or contact me and I will help you research the products available.

Advantages to secured cards include immediate access to funds while leveraging credit card features. Disadvantage include the requirement to make a cash deposit, rates are typically high (often above 20%) and limits depend your deposit amount and credit history. After a year, you may be eligible for an unsecured card.  If you want my help,  contact me here!

Option 3:  Get a Secured Loan  from any Retail Bank

A secured loan is money borrowed that is secured by an asset you own such as CD or Automobile. Similar to a secured credit card, these loans require a deposit and/or some sort of collateral, such as your car or home, to be approved. This link provides details to Wells Fargo Secured products. For more details, google is your friend.

Option 4:  Become an Authorized Signer on a credit card

One great way to get credit that reflects on your credit history is to become an authorized user on someone else’s credit card.

No credit inquiry or separate application is required. In fact, the process is quite simple and fast. If you have a trusted relationship with someone willing to provide access to their credit account, visit the credit providers website and inquire about authorized user access. In the past,

I have accessed this feature when logged into my credit card's online banking portal. It only takes about 3 minutes and only require  minimum information (none documented).

Remember that some providers will have their own process and some maybe easier than others.

Option 5: Contact a Credit Repair Service Agency

There are many credit repair services out there. I only work with companies that have proven results: MSI Credit SolutionsPlatinum Credit Solutions and ATX 737 Credit.  Before making any decision to use a credit repair agency, let's discuss your options. We need to identify your motivation and set realistic expectations. Also, look at their reviews. I provided links to their sites.
